20 Great Speed Dating Questions

Are you about to attend your first speed dating event? It can be a nerve-wracking experience and, if you don’t prepare well, it can rapidly get out of hand.

However, if you think about what you are hoping to achieve in a logical manner and carry a list of pre-prepared questions in with you, your nerves will soon settle down as you take charge of the situation. Anyway, now is too late to back out. You’ve bought your ticket, reserved your seat and the big event is looming large on your social calendar.

OK, in general terms, what do you want to find out about each of your speed dates?

Here are the four basic questions which cannot normally be established from a purely visual inspection.

  • Do you have anything in common?
  • Are they making you feel at ease?
  • Do you seem compatible?
  • Is there a spark between you?

So, how do you go about achieving these goals? Let’s look at twenty questions you could ask each person who sits opposite you.

  • What do you want from a date?
  • What don’t you want from a date?
  • What do you think ‘being in love’ means?
  • Why should I want to share all or part of my life with you?
  • If we were together, what do you think we would be doing in, say, 5 years from now?
  • Can you tell me a joke or a funny story – something which you think is really hilarious?
  • Can you tell me something which makes you feel particularly sad?
  • Name one thing which you have done which you are especially proud of.
  • What would or do your best friends say about you?
  • Please let me in on one small secret about yourself.
  • If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?
  • If you were at a party and someone who wasn’t very good looking was sitting on their own and visibly lonely, would you talk to them or ask them to dance?
  • What typical characteristic about your gender do you find most appealing?
  • Which non-fictional character would you most like to be or have been?
  • Which country would you most like to travel to and why?
  • Is there a hobby you would like to take up one day?
  • How do you most like spending your time?
  • If you won the lottery and were told you could buy one thing only, irrespective of its cost, what would that one thing be?
  • Would your friends agree with this purchase?
  • Why did you come to this speed dating event this evening?

Now you’ve got some ideas, you can develop these to better suit your own character and situation.

Remember, you should always keep eye contact with the other person, smile and be polite no matter how embarrassing some of the speed dates might be, never appear critical or judgemental in the way you ask your questions, and don’t forget to make notes as you go!
